for a designer it's a nightmare and it's somehow a vicious cycle. you can't do anything and if you do say something it might hurt them and you end up with no project or worse. haha

For us, if a user hasn't played the game before, then "New" means nothing.

If they have, then "New" just looks silly.

I think it's done mostly for the effect it has during upper management meetings.
